Caring for silica disks and micro disks

How to attach, clean, and store the disks, what to do if one cracks, and what to avoid.

Updated · Tomáš Sokol

Silica disks are thin silica wafers sealed in a laminate. Silica is hard but brittle, so most problems come from dropping or bending them.

Attaching

  • Use ordinary sticky tape or a double-sided adhesive pad. Don't put glue directly on the disk.
  • With one-sided disks, look for the side marked "Energy flows out this side". The manufacturer recommends facing it toward the place or object you're using the disk with.
  • Don't stick the disk anywhere it will bend, such as a soft phone case you fold often.
  • The manufacturer doesn't recommend placing it on bare skin. If you wear it, attach it to your clothing.

Cleaning

A dry or slightly damp cloth is all you need. Don't use solvents, and don't submerge the disk in water.

If a disk cracks

The laminate holds the pieces together. The manufacturer says you can keep using a cracked disk, as long as you don't open the laminate, so the silica stays inside. If the laminate is torn, throw the disk away with general household waste.

Storage

Store disks flat, for example in an envelope or between two pieces of cardboard. If you have several, don't stack them without protection, or they may get scratched.
