Tachyon, shungite and orgonite, what's the difference

Three things people often put side by side on a shelf. What each is made of, who makes it, what it looks like, how it's used and what it costs, in one clear table.

Updated · Tomáš Sokol

On a living-room shelf there's a glossy black pyramid, next to it a colourful cast piece flecked with gold shavings, and beside them a small grey disk that looks a bit like a saucer. A visitor asks whether they're all the same thing. They aren't, even if they look related at first glance. Shungite, orgonite and Tachyon come from completely different places, and each found its way into people's homes by a different route.

Shungite: a stone from Karelia

Shungite is a natural rock rich in carbon. It's mined in Karelia, in north-west Russia, and takes its name from the village of Shunga near Lake Onega. It's black, either matt or polished to a shine, and feels a little lighter in the hand than you'd expect from a stone.

People keep it at home as a pebble in a bowl, as a pyramid or sphere on a table, or as a small flat piece by the computer. It's sold by stone and mineral shops, and the price depends mostly on size and finish. It works like other minerals: a rough piece costs a few euros or pounds, a polished pyramid more.

Orgonite: a piece from the workshop

Orgonite is a made object. It's cast from resin mixed with metal filings or shavings, and often a crystal, most commonly quartz. Once the resin sets, you get a pyramid, cone or pendant with visible layers of metal and stone, rather like a decorative casting with a mosaic inside.

The name goes back to the Austrian psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich, who in the 1930s and 1940s used the word "orgone" for an energy he wrote about. Orgonite as it's sold today came much later. It has no single maker. Small craft workshops and people at home cast it from instructions, so it varies widely in look, size and price.

Tachyon: tachyonized objects from ATTI

Tachyon is the brand of Advanced Tachyon Technologies (ATTI), an American company founded by David Wagner. The company doesn't sell a stone or a casting. It takes ordinary materials and treats them with its own process, which it calls tachyonization. Tachyon says a tachyonized material becomes a permanent antenna for tachyon energy.

In practice, you get an object made for a particular use. It might be a silica disk under the pillow or under a glass, a pendant to wear, Sun Spots for a room, or a sleep pad. One company makes and sells the whole range, and every product has its own description and price in the Planet Tachyon shop.

Which one when

If you like minerals and enjoy stones that come from a particular place on Earth, shungite has a clear origin and a long history in Karelia. Orgonite tends to appeal to people who like handmade, one-off pieces, often from a maker they know.

Tachyon suits anyone who wants an object with a clear purpose and detailed directions from a single manufacturer. You know exactly what you're buying, how big it is and how to use it, and if you like, you can build up a set for the bedroom, the office or the car over time. That's what our kit builder is for. If you'd rather not start with a big purchase, begin with something small, such as Tach-O-Splash or the 24 mm micro disk.

It isn't a contest with one winner. Plenty of homes have all three on the shelf, and each has its place there.

Questions on this topic

Is Tachyon a type of stone, like shungite?
No. Shungite is a natural rock that is mined. Tachyon is the name of a company and of its tachyonization process, which it applies to different materials such as silica, glass and fabric.
Can I buy orgonite from one maker?
Orgonite has no single maker. Small craft workshops and people at home cast it from instructions, so the shape, contents and price vary a great deal.
Can I keep all three at home?
Yes, plenty of people do. Each has its own history and its own way of being used, so there's no need to pick one instead of the others.
Where should I start if I want to try Tachyon?
Most people start with a silica disk, a small pendant or Tach-O-Splash. The quiz or the product comparison can help you choose.
